The Perfect Date

Brooks decides to accept UConn's offer, because if he has to pretend to be somebody else to go to Yale, he does not want to go. Brooks makes up with Murph. He also meets up with Celia and writes a letter to her, where he reflects on how his previous ambitions were to drive the fanciest car, go to the nicest school, and date the prettiest girl. But he has revealed that these ambitions made him a bad friend, an ungrateful son, and a self-obsessed person. He writes that the times when he felt the most himself was when he was with Celia and wants to be with her.

Smart, ambitious Brooks Rattigan (Noah Centineo) is determined to go to Yale in THE PERFECT DATE. He knows his struggling-writer, single dad (Matt Walsh) can't swing the tuition, but if he gets in, he'll make it happen! Agreeing to fill in for a buddy who's supposed to take his rich cousin to a private-school dance (getting paid, of course), Brooks meets Celia Lieberman (Laura Marano), an unconventional, sassy girl. It's an immediate game of one-upsmanship, and there's a breezy connection between the two. When Celia ironically suggests that Brooks make the most of his "date-for-hire" status and create an app to make the money he needs for Yale, he's goes all in. In the blink of an eye, Brooks is a sought-after date-for-hire on "Stand-In" (an app his friend creates for him). Things get complicated when both Brooks and Celia confide in one another about their secret crushes. Maybe they can help each other out with those crushes -- the dazzling Shelby (Camila Mendes) for Brooks and the mysterious Franklin (Blaine Kern III) for Celia. They come up with a plan, and it works. And at least until Brooks and Celia encounter the usual misunderstandings and hurt feelings that sometimes happen between two people who discover they just may want something more than friendship.

Teen heartthrob Noah Centineo and the talented Laura Marano charm their way past a contrived story to deliver a witty, good-natured movie that will delight young romcom fans. It appears that Chris Nelson and his team hoped to capitalize on the success of Centineo's earlier Netflix movies (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser and To All the Boys I've Loved Before), and took pains to raise the bar with this new entry. Performances are uniformly first-rate; dialogue is sparkling; great pace, great timing. The messages the movie conveys are familiar -- the value of being true to oneself, integrity is better than faking it, and "we're all just figuring it out as we go along" -- and they're dispensed with both humor and conviction. The plot is The Perfect Date's weakest link. It doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter that half the cast is well beyond high school age. The solid work of everyone involved should be well received by enthusiastic teens. One might even say that this film could be called a "perfect date-movie."

Frasier, aka Miss Rhode Island, stole the spotlight in the Q&A portion of the Miss United States pageant. Instead of detailing her ideal romantic night out or saying something predictable like "dinner and a movie," when asked to describe her perfect date, Frasier replied, "That's a tough one. Um, I'd have to say April 25th, because it's not too hot, [and] not too cold. All you need is a light jacket." Icon.

For those wondering why April 25 was the date chosen for this script out of all 366 days of the year (we count Leap Day because it's respectful), the answer lies in a tweet from Shatner, and it's cute as hell.

In a 2021 interview with E! News(Opens in a new tab), Miss Congeniality director Donald Petrie confirmed the factoid and revealed that the line, written by screenwriter Marc Lawrence, originally included a different date. "I just said, 'Could it be April 25th? That's my wife's birthday,'" Petrie said. "So I'm very happy that each year on her birthday, there are all these memes going about."(Opens in a new tab)

Some might say I was born to grow up, become a writer, and type this very article, because who better to bring you April 25 news than someone who came into this very world on the perfect date? Something few people know is that I was actually due on April 24, but I waited a day, because I had a feeling April 25 would be perfect. And I was right.

Petrie's wife and I aren't the only people born on the perfect date. Actors Jonathan Bailey (the Anthony Bridgerton), Al Pacino, Renée Zellweger, and Gina Torres share an April 25 birthday, along with legendary jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. Plus, How I Met Your Mother's (fictional) Ted Mosby and Gilmore Girls' (fictional) Lorelai Gilmore have April 25 birthdays, too. Amazing, I know!

Hilarious movies like Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997) and Baby Mama (2008) were released on April 25, and the date also marks National Telephone Day, National DNA Day, National Lingerie Day, and Zucchini Bread Day. What more proof do you need? April 25 is the perfect date.

Now that you've seen Shatner's explanation, it's clear why the date was worthy of a Miss Congeniality shoutout. But you might still be wondering why people post about April 25 every single year. I've been celebrating the date since 1993 for personal reasons, but dedicated fans of the film have been annually commemorating the date since the movie's release in 2000. The reasoning is simple: Tradition!

The Miss Rhode Island quote is the film's most memorable, and recalling it every year is a perfect way for fans to honor Miss Congeniality. The quote will always be topical in Taurus season; everyone loves a good made-up holiday; and it's also just plain fun to share an inside joke with so many people online. It's why we celebrate Mean Girls Day every Oct. 3, post Justin Timberlake "It's gonna be May" memes every April 30, and share 30 Rock "Lemon, it's Wednesday" screenshots and Russian Doll "Thursday, what a concept!" screenshots on Wednesdays and Thursdays, respectively.

On every birthday invitation I sent out in college, I wrote, "Dress code: All you need is a light jacket." But is that true? Obviously, April 25 weather fluctuates every year, and whether it's "not to hot and not too cold" depends on where you live. But because of global warming, Frasier's favorite day could be getting less perfect with each passing year.

The premise of The Perfect Date may seem stereotypical, but its execution is anything but. The story centers on Brooks, a high school senior who launches an app that lets women hire him for dates. Celia is the one who gives him this idea, thanks to the aforementioned night out that winds up going surprisingly well. Of course, these two don't get together right away: Brooks has a crush on a rich girl named Shelby (Camila Mendes), and Celia starts liking a music nerd named Franklin (Blaine Kern III). But after a series of events, they (spoiler!!!) realize their feelings for each other and live happily ever after.

Centineo first became a standard Netflix star after playing high school jock Peter Kavinsky in 2018's To All the Boys I've Loved Before. Following another Netflix role in Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Centineo plays high school senior Brooks Rattigan in The Perfect Date, which premiered on the streaming service on April 12. The character hopes to attend Yale University, but he needs to find a creative way to earn extra money for tuition. After escorting a classmate's cousin (Laura Marano) to a school dance in exchange for cash, Brooks convinces best friend Murph (Odiseas Georgiadi) to create an app advertising Brooks' "stand-in" services for girls needing a date. The app becomes a hit, but Brooks begins to realize that choosing these experiences over his real life is more complicated than it first seemed.

Bloom is credited as a co-screenwriter on The Perfect Date, and according to an interview with Mass Live, the novel actually began as a screenplay after Bloom learned of a friend's daughter who suddenly needed a prom date. Although he had a background in screenwriting and high-profile actors such as Zac Efron and Shia LaBeouf were once attached to the script, the project was never made, prompting its transition into a book. The change of plans evidently worked, as production company Awesomeness Films contacted Bloom about the script on the same day he received a publishing deal for The Stand-In.

No matter what you decide to do, remember that a date is a time to either get to know a potential partner more, or reconnect with your significant other. At the end of the day, that is the most important thing.

Do whatever you need to make sure you remember the date. Create a reminder on your phone, add it to your digital calendar, or write it down in your planner. Heck, post it to the fridge or on the mirror you use to get ready! Anything you can to remind you. Yes, date night is THAT important to your relationship. 041b061a72
